Monday, August 31st, Big Bags Done!!

20 big bags for the show boutique are finished!! The binding for the last few was foraged from my fabric stash. They each call for 1/2 yard of fabric for the binding and I didn't have 1/2 yard of this bright green marble, but I used it anyway because I love the contrast of color. Well, the planets aligned perfectly and this is all I had left upon completion. Not even enough to go into my scrap stash!!

Saturday, August 30th, Picture perfect pie

How come the purchased, frozen pies brown perfectly, but the ones that take hours and are made from scratch don't look nearly as appetizing? Chuck bought this pie from Schwan's and baked it this week. It was delicious warmed with Schwan's vanilla ice cream.

Friday, August 29th, Crazy birds

It seems like when it rains, the gold finches go crazy for their seed. It has been raining for the past three days and our feeder is covered with finches. I counted 9 at one time. We just filled it on Sunday and by the time the sun went down tonight, it was completely empty. Well, I hope they enjoyed it because I am not buying more this season. It is $17.00/bag at WalMart. Fly away to warmer climates little friends!!

Thursday, August 27th, Wearin' it and proud!!

When we were at the family reunion, my sister gave pillowcases to my cousin Roger and his wife. I cut them out for Beryl and she sewed them while we were watching a movie back in July when we visited. Well, Rene loved them and as a thank you, she sent this t-shirt to both Beryl and I. I love it!!! Back when I was a teen, I bought a t-shirt at the state fair that said, "I'm Farm Grown and Illinois good" and I wore it out.
I'm not sure 5 minutes of cutting really deserved such a nice gift, but I'll take it!

Wednesday, August 26th, I love the rainy days..

What a glorious day, it is pouring rain outside and I just love the sound of it. It started right before I went to bed last night and it's still coming down. I just wish it would keep it up while I nap today for work tonight! That is the best sleep....

Tuesday, August 25th, Colorful dinner

This was my dinner tonight: grilled lime marinated Mahi Mahi with peach-avocado salsa, grilled zucchini and corn on the cob. It tasted as good as it looked!!!

Monday, August 24th, More yard work

Three years ago, when we replanted the beds in the front of the house, we took out a berm that had become terribly overgrown. I love Lilac bushes so much that I didn't want to lose them. Well, they were too big and when moving them to the back they just never really took off. So we made the decision to take them out and replace them with new ones:
Going from left to right, bushes 1, 3 and 4 needed to come out. Bush 2 is fairly new and looks great. My job was to cut the branches down so Chuck could dig out the base.
When I got to bush 4, I got a great surprise:
There is enough new growth at the base to leave it and see if it will take off. This bed needs lots of loving, but I am always up for it. I feel like I have muscle power to do it now!!

Sunday, August 23rd, Spoiling the kid

When the girls come home they always have a list of places and things they want to do. Today after church, we took Candice to one of her favorites:
Portillo's in Vernon Hills.
She loves their cheese fries and craves them when not at home.
Chuck talks about their chili cheese dogs and usually gets two. I love their beef and cheddar sandwich, but after the indulgence of yesterday, I settled for my second favorite which is the chopped salad from Barnelli's. Yummy!!!

Saturday, August 22nd, Day trip to Galena

We took a trip to Galena today for the guys to ride 42 miles of excruciating hills from Lena to Galena and the gals to do some exploring in town.
Wade was their Sag Wagon driver and followed them so if anyone got hurt or they had a bike problem, they had support. He also carried the extra water and snacks. Three years ago, when they did this, it was in the mid 90's and a brutal ride. This year the temperature barely reached 75 and was absolutely gorgeous.
Four gals then took off to Galena in another vehicle, (not the one pictured above) for some shopping, and lunch. I took this picture for my dad and cousin. It is a 1954 Farmall named Chelsea Lee after the guy's niece who was killed in a car accident. It is a real beauty!!
We like to stop at the observation tower along Route 20 and this year it is closed for repairs. Sad!!! So we snapped a picture with the incredible views in the background:
On to town. We found a quilt shop that was having a sale of 25% off all fabric in the store. I still needed more for the items I am making for the boutique. We had lunch at the DeSoto House which is the oldest hotel in the state of Illinois.
Before any store exploring, we decided to go on a garden tour. We went to Linmar Garden, which is privately owned by Hal Martin, an artist. He has been gardening the 3 1/2 acres around his property for the past 33 years. It had been used as an informal dump by many people and needed so much love. Well, he has made a masterpiece!! Pictured above is Sally, the garden cat. She doesn't live here, but shows up everyday at 11 and 2 for the tour.
There are water features galore and Hal has had a concrete man working for him for the entire time he has lived there. That man is now 87 and still climbs the ladders and hauls things. He loves the work that he does.
This gargoyle is the brother of the one that lives in my front yard!!

When they were excavating, they found a stone foundation and the historians in the area have determined that it is the foundation of the first African-American church in the state of Illinois. Hal had concrete planters built around the periphery and a water feature in the center.
We ended the tour in the backyard on the patio. This is the view from there!!!
About 20 minutes into our tour, the guys called that they had already made it to town. We were pretty disappointed because we didn't get any shopping in except for the quilt shop.
We decided that next year we are spending the night!!!
We all ate together at 111 Main which was very pricey, so almost everyone had a sandwich. I was so full from the hamburger for lunch that was about the size of my head, that I just had soup and salad and many of Chuck's fries.
A great day!!!

Friday, August 21st, Fun at the bridal shop

Candice is a bridesmaid in her friend Allison's wedding in December. Since she has a very busy fall, we had her fitting and ordered the dress today.
Don't want to zoom in too much to spoil the surprise, but I don't think it needs to be altered.
It will be in this color. Can't wait to see the beauty of the day!!!

Thursday, August 20th, Whoo Hoo!!!

I have been on the Curves food plan combined with the strength training since June 27th. It has been so much work, but I don't feel in the least bit deprived with my food intake. This week, my total weight loss is 12 pounds!!! Now, I just have to keep it up!
Pictured above is me on "The Demon I". But, I am getting better and better on it.

Wednesday, August 19th, Pet peeve

I think my mom instilled in me the house rule that you never go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink. I have always maintained that principle. We may have a party til 12, but I stay up and do the dishes before going to bed.
Well, when I got home from guild last night, I was exhausted and was falling asleep in the car on the way home, so when I saw this in the sink upon entering the houseI just couldn't do them. This morning before making coffee, I had to empty the dishwasher and reload it. It made for a very crabby mommy moment. I'll get over it, but I made my displeasure very evident to my hubby and daughter.

Tuesday, August 18th, Such beauty

Tonight our guild speaker was Edyta Sitar, founder of "Laundry Basket Quilts". She brought dozens and dozens of quilts and was a terrific speaker. As she showed her quilts, she told her journey of quilting. Her husband came with her and is incredibly supportive of all of her endeavors. She designs fabrics for Moda and passed around samples of some of the lines that are soon to be released.

The crowd was massed around her table of patterns and fabrics for at least 15 minutes after the meeting. I am sorry that I will miss her workshop tomorrow. It promises to be wonderful.

Monday, August 17th, New color

Candice is always playing with her hair color, and has decided to go back to her more natural color:

She is hating my obsession with the camera lately.
Isn't she just gorgeous? Her head could be shaved and she could dye her skin purple and she would still be lovely.

Sunday, August 16th, Movie time

Chuck and I planned on going to the Harry Potter movie since it's release, but haven't found the time. Today, it was hot, muggy and rainy, so we grabbed a quick sandwich after church and went to the 12:40 show. I thoroughly enjoyed it and cried like I cried at the end of the 6th book when I read it.When I took the above picture, the manager scolded me for having a camera. I think maybe there is a rule about it. Well, unless I had hundreds of memory cards, I don't think I could have pirated this movie!! Reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where Kramer is in the movie pirating business. I don't have that kind of nerve!

Saturday, August 15th, How did that happen?

Today was an all day scrap booking crop at church and three of us noticed that we dressed in a theme color:Can you "teal" what color it was????

Friday, August 14th, Hasta Luego

Second Friday is Bunco night in the neighborhood!! Tonight we planned a special good bye for our neighbor, Hillary who will be moving to Colorado in a couple of weeks. It was a fiesta theme and as always, Marcy dressed the part:Jean wore a hat, but it wasn't exactly a Sombrero!!! I'll let you decide what part she was attempting to play:
Janet hosted and supplemented the normal Bunco crown with a cactus crown. (when you roll a Bunco, you wear the crown until the next person gets one)
The rolls weren't in my favor tonight, and I only wore the crown once:
Poor Hillary, she had the hardest time saying good bye to us tonight.
Debbie provided some levity with the Disney princess cake for her and the girls:
Hillary, you will be missed.

Thursday, August 13th, Doctors who have been there...

Since moving to Lake County, I have seen Dr. Adriana Spellman as my Gyne. She cried with me when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, treated me for endometriosis and performed surgery in 2003.
Nothing, I mean, nothing prepared me when I found out she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I saw her when she was seeing a patient in the ICU shortly after she finished chemo and we talked about her experience. She has been an amazing tower of strength through the whole ordeal and continued to work full-time through the whole process. Breast cancer is very prevalent today and they say that the older you get, the higher the chances are of being diagnosed. However, at the same time she was going through treatment, so was her partner, Dr. Eileen Morrison. What are the chances??

Last weekend, they formed a team of 10 and walked the 60 mile Avon Breast Cancer walk. They raised over $30,000 for breast cancer treatment and research.
I'm so proud to call her my doctor and friend.

Wednesday, August 12th, visible reminders

Gotta tell you, I feel every bit of my fall. Every minuscule fiber in my body has ached since Sunday. It gives me way more compassion for people that I take care of that have had a fall or been in an accident of some kind.
There are still remnants of color that will remind me of why I am so sore:
Surprisingly they really don't hurt, not like my upper back, my chest and my left arm!!

Tuesday, August 11th, Discovery

Sunday, we took the van to the wash bay at the Sheriff's department headquarters and while I was sitting inside recovering from my injuries, I noticed something sparkly in the vent on my side of the van:That is glass left over from an accident I had in February of 2006. I was coming back from taking care of my mom for a day and when I merged onto the Edens, a semi hit my side mirror, which flipped around and shattered the passenger side window. There were little shards of glass everywhere, but I thought that it was all gone. Amazing what remains after 3 1/2 years!!!

Monday, August 10th, Interesting sky

Yesterday afternoon, Chuck and I had to stop at WalMart on the way home from biking. The northern sky looked like a big storm was blowing in and we wanted to be safe in our house when it did.
The closer clouds looked like a sheet that was folded very neatly, but the clouds on the horizon were swirling and growing menacingly. Chuck said it kind of looked like the scene from "Independence Day" when the aliens invade and destroy everything in their path.
Even with how it looked, we only got a few sprinkles out of the deal. Better to be prepared, I always say.

Sunday, August 9th, Bikin' with the boys and feel like I was hit by a truck!!

Today was our monthly family bike ride. There hasn't been much interest this summer, so it is usually us and the Stratman's, which is ok with me. Since Celia is in Portland, I was the lone gal for this one, and Tim was able to go.We took the Des Plaines River Trail north from Independence Grove, which is so lovely. They have made the trail go under several busy roads.
Our goal was to do 20 miles round trip, but at about mile 8.5, I hit a bit of soft gravel and wiped out. I am banged up and sore, but nothing broken.

Chuck was so encouraging for me the whole time and even though I was bleeding, sore and shaky, I rode 16.9 miles, which is basically 17, but I need to round up to 20, right??? I even rode all of the hills, which prior to my Curves workout, I would have never been able to do. Celia would have been so proud!!

Chuck said I am not eligible for the Black Helmet award as I didn't have any stitches and no broken bones. But thank God for that!!!
