Maybe fall is my favorite season...

Candice came home for fall break late Thursday night and we have the most awesome weather promised this weekend. Yesterday morning we went for a walk in the Rollins Savanna just down the road from us and walked the entire 3.6 miles. Catie will be so pleased to know that we saw at least 4 snakes. One big (by big, I mean 2 feet long) momma snake and three little baby snakes, all in different areas of the trail. Candice was freaked but I was totally calm. No pics, because remember, I have no camera and Chuck's is always with him.
When Chuck got home from work, we headed to Royal Oak Farm Orchard in Harvard. What a perfect day to pick apples, eat apple cider donuts and get a pumpkin. It made me a little sad, because this was our tradition with Catie every year when she came home for fall break. A perfect day, with only one thing lacking....our Catiedid. Candice's quick wit and zest for life soon made me happy again...she is just such a blast!!!We ran into the Cannons from Grayslake, whose daughter, Amanda was a classmate of Candice's from K-12. It was fun to catch up with what is going on in their lives. Their son, Adam is hiking the entire Appalachian trail and he started in May. Then we ran into Colleen, the former owner of my local quilt shop, whom I haven't seen since she sold the shop.Today we were going to Galena and the men were going to bike from Lena to Galena, while us gals shopped or hiked, or whatever. Well, the group became very small...the last time we did this there was about 12 of us and it was so fun. With the price of gas, it didn't seem prudent. So, instead, the three guys are going to bike locally and us gals are "hanging out". Then, we are going out for dinner. I think Candice wants to bake today with those luscious apples we picked yesterday.
The "fruits" of our labors. Note how there are quite a variety of sizes and shapes. That's because we love so many apple varieties. Yesterday, we picked Ultragold, Senshu, Gala, Cortland, Enterprise and Jonagold. Because they are mixed in the bag, we have no idea what's what, so we will see how they blend in baked goods. Pie, anyone?????
